Youkoso/Welcome!
Traditional Goju-ryu karate-do classes in Twyford, Reading, Berkshire

Karate martial arts lessons for adults and children at the Twyford Youth & Community Centre with an experienced, police checked and qualified instructor.

Sensei Matt Taylor started his karate journey in 1988 at the age of 14 and obtained his first black belt in 1997. He now trains and instructs as a 4th Dan at his Twyford karate school dojo as well as at the Wokingham Karate Academy where he began his studies.

The Goju-ryu style of karate taught is one of the original traditional styles to come from Okinawa, Japan. Its roots come from the Chinese White Crane style of Shaolin boxing and it serves as a complete system for the mind and body. As well as self defence it's an ideal sport for health and fitness that builds spirit and helps with confidence, discipline, self-esteem and concentration.

It's fitness with a purpose learning skills that last a lifetime

Our training

We focus on the traditional aspect of karate building a strong mind and body for self defence. We also train for the sports side to prepare for competition.

Our training is based on that found in Okinawa 100 years ago and the way it is still practised there today, only these days there is more focus on health and safety.

Basics

Good basics are the foundation for your karate and our training stresses their importance. By continuously practising the basics of stances, kicks, punches and blocks correctly we ensure a great standard follows us as we progress.

Kata & its application

Kata strings techniques together so you can practice them on your own. They are more than just a sequence of moves and unlike some clubs we also analyse and practice the meaning of the moves (bunkai).

Kumite

We perform both structured sparring and free sparring to help build confidence in a combat situation and practice the techniques learnt in class. We also practice tournament rules kumite for competition.

Conditioning & bag work

Conditioning the body and mind is an important part of karate. Strengthening the body so that it can perform effectively is great for fitness and knowing what it's like to hit or take a blow prepares you against an attacker.

How much does it cost ?

It cost nothing to think bigger than you are, BUT cost a fortune to think less of yourself.
